Chapter Sixteen

You know the reoccurring dream where you’re falling, and you suddenly jerk awake before you hit the ground?

Well, falling, then startling awake choking on a mouthful of water as you drown is even shittier.

My eyes fly open as I try to figure out where I am and how to keep my head above the water. It would be great if I knew which way was up, but it’s too dark to see anything. There’s nothing but splashing and sputtering with the occasional hard slap of someone else’s arm or kick of their foot in my legs and lower body.

Henry.

I force my arms to my sides, trying to get my body to calm down and relax, even though it goes against my instincts to fight. Finally, my head pops up above the waterline long enough to take in several breaths of air. When I can speak, I yell, “Henry? Henry, it’s okay. Stop fighting it!”

I tread water, keeping my feet moving while feeling around the water until my fingertips find his smooth skin, a shoulder or arm that I grab before it pushes me under again. “Henry, stop!”

His movements slow, there’s a loud cough, and then he says, “Lena?”

“I’m here. It’s okay,” I lie.

There’s more splashing, then, “Where the fuck are we?”

“The wolves’ well, apparently,” I answer, tilting my head back to keep my chin above the water. Once I stop moving, the cold begins to sink in.

“Fuck!” Then there’s a loud slap. “We’re going to drown or freeze to death down here!”

No. No, I did not survive this long fighting monsters to be killed in a well. I have to find a way out of here, for Emery. “Dominick will find us,” I say, because I’m not ready to give up hope of making it out of here just yet. “Or Cade. I called Cade before they threw us down here!” I thankfully remember.

Despite how cold it is, I know my clothes need to go. My pants, shoes, and sweatshirt are just weighing me down, pulling me down faster into the depths of the water, so I work to remove my shoes and then the rest, feeling lighter once I’m naked except for my underwear. My nipples are hard enough to cut glass.

“How will either of them find us?” Henry asks. There’s a splash, and then he’s in front of me. “We’re under the ground, and there’s nowhere for us to go!”

“I don’t know, but they will! Cade won’t leave the grounds until he finds us. My SUV’s out front. He knows we were coming and that we’re still here somewhere.”

“That’s a lot of faith you have in a human,” he grumbles, and then there’s another splash before he sputters. “We’ll freeze…freeze to death before he finds us!”

“Just keep swimming.”

“Yeah, okay, Dory. Finding Lena and Henry isn’t going to have a happy ending like…like a kids movie.”

“You don’t know that!” I tell him as my teeth start to chatter.

“Easy for you to say. My ribs are…they’re badly bruised if not broken.
